AUMEO AUDIO

Aumeo is a new audio IOT startup based in Hong Kong that’s transforming the way people hear. Genetic disorders, too many rock concerts, or just plain old aging are all factors in hearing quality. It boils down to this: every individual hears high and low sound frequencies differently. A fun way to think about Aumeo is like prescription glasses for your ears. Aumeo’s award-winning, patented algorithm allows users to truly create a tailored listening experience through their hardware and app. Today, Aumeo can be purchased online or in retailers across the US, Europe, and most recently Japan.

BIG GOALS AND A VERY TIGHT TIMELINE

In true frenzied startup fashion, our client had many pressing needs on a short timeline, with the most urgent being a full re-design of the Aumeo app before their rapidly approaching Indiegogo campaign. It was 5 weeks, 3 days until go-time and we were off to the races. We needed a thorough audit of the existing app, an accompanying overhaul of the user experience, and a complete redo of the user interface and prototyping. Not to mention lightning rounds of user testing along with all the usual excitement of an Apple App Store submission.

THIS IS NOT A TEST

When Aumeo first approached us, the original app required a hearing test. We were a bit nervous; test results can be scary. Luckily we passed, but after this very first introduction we knew that re-working the test experience would be a critical part of Aumeo’s success. This component was integral to the app, so together with the founding team, we strategized how to make the hearing test fun, and maybe even cool. Aumeo had high hopes of revolutionizing the audio market and wanted their app and customer experience to reflect their innovative technology.

THE CREATION OF THE SOUND-PRINT & AUDIO PROFILE

During the discovery phase, Pushup created mockups of different areas of user interaction in the app, specifically focusing on the complicated and un-sexy hearing test. After exploring multiple solutions, we quickly landed on an animated “sound print” graphic inspired by an iconic curved sound-wave. The new graphic lets the user see their left and right ear “audio profile” results in a dynamic way. The newly named “audio profile” also dramatically cut down on the number of screens required to complete the audio test. With its dynamic look, the audio profile graphic and animation is also used predominantly in Aumeo’s promotional materials, videos, and packaging.

HAND ON THE DIAL & USER TESTING

The UI of the app features a large graphic dial users adjust, up and down, with their fingertips to complete their “audio profile”. The beta versions of the app had a lag and the experience was not as smooth as desired. Through a major push of user testing street audits, we were able to identify and fix the problem before Aumeo’s Indiegogo launch.
Central Hong Kong is a magnetic melting pot of people from all over the world and luckily for us, an incredibly friendly and willing test audience for our new app. We were quickly able to identify kinks, and able to quickly work through revisions with our development team. It was also rewarding to see people’s genuine excitement over the new technology.

POPUPS OR NO POPUPS

As a team, we debated including instructional pop-ups that would guide the user—would they be helpful or annoying? The thinking was that the UX process to complete an audio profile was completely new and not something that a user would do very often (every three months or so). Ultimately, we decided to go with pop-ups to reduce confusion.

WE’RE LIVE IN 3,2,1…

Aumeo launched with a bang! After the first 5 hours of the Indiegogo campaign, the brand was 90% funded and went on to raise 600% over their funding goal. It was an incredible start to Aumeo’s journey and so exciting to watch all of our hard work literally pay off. Throughout the campaign we A/B tested ads on social media to pinpoint brand messaging and fine-tune taglines.

PACKAGING

After the successful end to Aumeo’s crowd-funding campaign, Pushup created the product packaging and user guides. To showcase the sleek design of the Aumeo Player, the device was enclosed under an acrylic jewel-like cover and secured by high density foam. The device took center stage: the additional components, accessories, and printed collateral were thoughtfully tucked away behind the foam platform. Aumeo was able to package and ship local crowd-funded orders by Christmas along with international orders early in the new year. This was an incredible accomplishment and record timing for tech-based products on Indiegogo.
